Gall Bladder Disease

The gallbladder is an intraperitoneal pear-shaped organ that lies within the gallbladder fossa between the inferior aspects of the right and quadrate lobes of the liver. Its primary is to store and concentrate bile produced by the liver, which is then released from the gallbladder in response to cholecystokinin.

Gallstone disease is a common condition, affecting around 10-14% in Western populations. Gallstones can result in simple pathology, such as biliary colic, or serious conditions, such as obstructive jaundice or cholangitis. Most cases can be investigated will ultrasound initially and most cases will also require laparoscopic cholecystectomy eventually too
