Urinary tract infections, whilst commonly uncomplicated and often managed conservatively, can lead to overwhelming sepsis and are a cause of significant morbidity and mortality. As ensuring to be able to investigate and manage them appropriately is essential.

Acute urinary retention occurs commonly in older men post-operatively, however if undetected can lead to AKI and delirium developing. Acute kidney injury itself is an important area of patient care, caused by either pre-renal, intrinsic, or post-renal factors, all of which often need to be investigated once an AKI is detected.
